The proximity of the District to Myanmar makes its easy for the militants to escape. These militant outfits frequent the District en route Myanmar.

Each of the Manipur’s nine Districts has been severely affected by militancy, but the hilly District of Chandel has witnessed one of the most persistent violence by the militants, in particular the UNLF. A total of 38 militancy-related fatalities were reported from Chandel in 2006. (ANI)
