SC issues notice to Election Commission, PRP

SC issues notice to Election Commission, PRP New Delhi, Apr 2 : The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notices to the Election Commission and Telugu actor Chiranjeevi-led Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) on the matter of an allotment of a rail engine symbol to the PRP.

A Bench of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam sought an explanation from the Election Commission on a petition filed by Rashtriya Krantikari Samajwadi Party (RKSP).

The RKSP, in its petition to the apex court, claimed that its candidates had been fighting the earlier elections on the rail engine symbol.

The RKSP stated that it was an unrecognized national party with strongholds in states like Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir , Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka besides Andhra Pradesh.

The party expressed its resentment against the allotment of the same locomotive symbol to the PRP.

The Election Commission had alloted the rail engine symbol to Praja Rajyam on the directions of the Supreme Court. The court had however clarified that the directions were only "interim" for the present elections. (ANI)
