Satellite images and recent studies have been indicating algal bloom in Lake Erie. The algae are spreading throughout the waters of Lake Erie. The samples taken of the lake indicates about record-breaking amount of algae.

After carrying out the sample testing, researchers think that it is the biggest and most dangerous algal bloom ever recorded in the fourth-largest Great Lake. The situation could prove risk for the nearby Northeast citizens, marine life and water supply.

The satellite images have been released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Experts said that the algal bloom will become the largest and most deadly one in Lake Erie and will beat 2011's previous record.

Blue and green algal blooms like cyanobacteria in Lake Erie results into extremely dangerous chemical called microcystin. It is already known for killing mass amounts of marine life and causing many problems in humans.

If a person accidentally drinks the contaminated water then he can suffer from symptoms like nausea, diarrhea and liver damage. Also, the bacteria do not go away by simply boiling the water, as warmer the water, the more cyanobacteria thrive.

Owing these risks, the Ohio Department of Health issued a warning with regard to the dangers of the algae in Lake Erie. Officials asked people not to go near the lake and do not make any contact with water from the lake.

Human intervention is the main reason behind the spread of algae in Lake Erie and can be prevented as well.
