From April 2 New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport can suffer from some irregular schedules as one of the three runways will undergo renovation for six months.

Ministry of civil aviation reveals that out of three runways, runway 28 will be shut down from April 2 and will come into action from September 28. Authorities have taken steps to manage air traffic to ensure minimum nuisance and handle it by using runway 27 and 29.

Directorate General of Civil Aviation had conducted a survey on runway 28, which was last upgraded in 1999 and told the authorities that it need major repairs. Repairs include recarpeting of the surface, upgrading support systems like runway lighting equipment.

IGI airport has a capacity to handle 75 flights but at present manage to handle 60 flights an hour at peak time (6-10 am and 6-10 pm); studies revealed that repair of runway will reduce the air traffic by 20 %.

Ministry has told Airports Authority of India (AAI) to glance in to this matter carefully and manage the air traffic with more readiness. Authorities told they will ensure minimum inconvenience to passengers and minimum reduction of capacity.
