Turkey's Erdogan in Brussels for talks on Gaza, Iran, EU plans

TurkeyBrussels - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in the European Union's capital on Monday for talks on Iran, Gaza and his country's EU hopes, officials in Brussels said.

Erdogan was due to meet the EU's highest foreign-policy official, Javier Solana, to "discuss EU-Turkey relations and other foreign policy issues, in particular the latest developments in the Middle East and Iran," a statement from Solana's office said.

Body of murdered girl, 8, flown from Germany to Turkey

Turkish FlagPaderborn, Germany - The remains of a schoolgirl who was abducted, sexually assaulted and murdered in Germany were being flown to her ancestral home in Turkey Friday as police admitted they had no idea yet who killed Kardelen, 8.

The child's naked body was found Thursday in woods 60 kilometres from her home in the northern German city of Paderborn.

Police pathologists identified the body and confirmed she had been sexually attacked.

Turkey's Erdogan questions Israel's membership of UN

Recep Tayyip ErdoganAnkara - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday questioned why Israel is allowed to continue to be a member of the United Nations whilst it ignores UN resolutions to stop fighting in Gaza, the Anadolu news agency reported.

"How can a member which refuses to implement UN Security Council resolutions be allowed to enter through the gates of the UN," Erdogan said.

Friday's statement was the latest in a series of harsh reactions from Erdogan over Israel's continued military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Greece condemns air violations by Turkey

Greece condemns air violations by TurkeyAthens  - Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyianni on MOnday condemned air violations by Turkey and said relations between the two traditional foes had stagnated last year.

"The attempts to improve our relations with Ankara stagnated in 2008 and we will strive to improve this in the new year," Bakoyianni said following a meeting with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.

Athens claims that Turkish fighter jets have repeatedly been violating Greece's air space in recent weeks.
