Agartala, Jan. 12 : Twenty-eight hardcore militants of the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) officially laid down arms during a surrender ceremony at the 21 Assam Rifles range head quarters in Agartala with arms and ammunition.
The militants informed that they had fled from their camps in the forest of neighbouring Bangladesh mainly for two reasons - food crisis in Bangladesh camps and non-payment by the leaders of the militant outfits to the down rang cadres.
They also feared that with the forming of the new democratic government in Bangladesh there are every possibility of raids and anti-insurgency operation against Indian militants harboring in Bangladesh.
New Delhi, Jan 5 : Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today condoled the passing away of the former Chief Minister of Tripura and Senior Congress leader Sudhir Ranjan Majumdar.
In his condolence message, Dr. Singh recalled Majumdar''s contribution of the development of the state.
"I extend my heartfelt condolences to the members of his bereaved family and to all those who followed him and respected him as their friend and leader," Dr. Singh said.
Agartala, Dec. 31: Oddissi, one of the eight Indian classical dance forms, which originated in Orissa State, is now being initiated in Tripura.
A Kathak dancer of Padmabibhusan Kelucharan Mahapatra Gharana of Bubanaswas, has taken upon herself to popularise the Oddissi dance form through fusion in remote Tripura, a place where this dance form was practically unknown till recently.
Sarbani Nandi, an accomplished Kathak dancer from the Lucknow Gharana, holding a national scholarship, is popularizing the Oddissi dance form. She has given solo performances across the country and later acquired a degree in it. She gives fusion performances.
Agartala, Dec. 23 : The implementation of various schemes under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) has given a reason to smile to the people in Tripura, especially the poor in the State's rural areas.
The poor are happy to notice that under the NREGA, they are getting employment in the various developments schemes.
For instance, the road connectivity in Panisagar Block of north Tripura is likely to transform the lives of a lot of people, mostly of the tribal farmers.
Agartala, Dec. 17 : A dawn-to-dusk strike in Tripura, called by the Congress supported Youth Congress and Seva Dal demanding arrest of two Leftist Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Sahid Choudhury and Partha Das during a protest rally, paralyzed normal life in the Left-ruled state Wednesday.
Most markets, shops and business establishments remained closed in this northeastern state while roads wore a deserted look.
