India, Russia to extend military cooperation till 2020

New Delhi, Sep 29: India and Russia today agreed to extend the term of the Indo-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission for Military-Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-MTC) for another ten years -- till 2020, leading to a further strengthening of ties between both countries.

Russia’s Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov today met his Indian counterpart A K Antony for one-to-one talks and later co-presided over a session of the Indo-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission for Military-Technical Cooperation.

Antony termed today’s meeting of the IRIGC-MTC as very successful, and was hopeful of it having a positive outcome.

Earlier, Serdyukov laid a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate. After paying homage, Serdyukov was presented a Guard of Honour at South Block by the Indian armed forces.

The meeting is likely to take up renewed price negotiations for 1.5 billion dollar Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier, plans for developing a joint fifth generation fighter aircraft and medium transport aircraft, and T-90 tanks technology transfer, sources said.

Lavrov wants new European security treaty after Georgia conflict

New York - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei LavrovRussian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Saturday told the UN General Assembly that the European security infrastructure had failed in "recent events" and called for a new Europe-wide security treaty.

Lavrov said that in the conflict in the Caucasus, the "existing architecture of security in Europe did not pass the strength test in recent events."

Medvedev: Russia will modernize nuclear deterrent

Moscow - President Dmitry Medvedev has announced a comprehensive modernization of Russia's armed forces and its nuclear weapons, Russian media reported Saturday.

By 2020, there would be complete overhaul of the nuclear deterrent, Medvedev said at the conclusion of military exercises in the Urals.

The plans include a new generation of nuclear submarines and cruise missiles, as well as better coordination of the country's missile defence system with reconnaissance satellites in space.

Recent events in Georgia's breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia had brought the security situation to a head, he said.
