Suspected Muslim militant arrested in southern Philippines Suspected Muslim militant arrested in southern Philippines Manila  - Government troops arrested a suspected Muslim militant after an armed skirmish in the southern Philippines, a regional military commander said Monday.

Major General Reynaldo Mapagu said the suspect, Giovanni de Ocampo, is a former communist rebel who recently joined a unit of the regional terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) in the Philippines.

Senior Superintendent Jesus Gatchalian said the victims, aged 5 to 9, were sleeping when the fire broke out in their house in Padre Garcia town in Batangas province, 90 kilometres south of Manila.

Gatchalian said the father, who survived the accident, was not able to save the children because the flames spread swiftly. The mother was not at the house at the time of the accident.

Inquiry ordered into killing of Philippine rebel leader's daughterManila  - Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo ordered an investigation into the killing of the daughter of a senior communist rebel leader, an official said Saturday.

Arroyo wanted the killers of Rebelyn Pitao, 20, to be immediately brought to justice, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said.

Pitao was a daughter of Leoncio Pitao, also known as Commander Parago, of the New People's Army, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines.

Frenchwoman murdered in the Philippines, three suspects arrested Manila  - A 54-year-old Frenchwoman was shot dead in the Philippines and three suspects, including a Frenchman, were arrested for alleged involvement in the murder, police said Thursday.

Genevieve Sonia Mas, who arrived in the country last December, was killed while riding a tricycle in San Carlos City in Negros Occidental province, 540 kilometers south of Manila, on Tuesday.

Philippine shares rise 2 per centManila  - Philippine share prices rose 2.03 per cent on Thursday buoyed by increases in Asian stock markets and on Wall Street.

The Philippine Stock Exchange's 30-share composite index jumped 38.38 points to close at 1,924.30, from Wednesday's finish of 1,885.92.

A total of 1.31 billion shares valued at 2.76 billion pesos (56.90 million dollars) were traded.

Gainers outpaced losers 51 to 31, with 39 issues unchanged.

Communist rebel leader arrested in the Philippines

Communist rebel leader arrested in the PhilippinesManila  - A communist rebel leader accused of directing the guerrillas' extortion activities in the central Philippines has been arrested, a military spokesman said Tuesday.

Eduardo Sarmiento, head of a regional communist party committee in the central region of Visayas, was apprehended on February 24 in Manila.

Brigadier General Guadencio Pangilinan said "high explosives" were seized from Sarmiento during his arrest by a joint team of police officers and army intelligence operatives.
