Tokyo stocks gain despite industry output dropTokyo  - Stocks in Tokyo gained ground Friday despite a government report saying industry output recorded its sharpest fall in history.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average was up 96.27 points, or 1.12 per cent to 8,695.77 by mid-trading.

The broader Topix index of all first-section issues rose 5.45 points, or 0.65 per cent, to 841.47.

The Minstry for Economy, Trade and Industry said production dropped by 8.1 per cent compared to the previous month, the largest drop on record since 1953, as foreign demand in cars or electronic goods plunged, dealing a heavy blow to Japan's export-oriented industry.

Tokyo stocks stronger on Wall Street gainsTokyo - Stocks in Tokyo inched up Thursday after Wall Street gains on encouraging data on US consumer spending.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average was up 36.03 points, or 0.42 per cent to 8,553.13 by mid-trading. Trading volume was low as investors were absent because of the Christmas holidays.

The broader Topix index of all first-section issues rose 5.23 points, or 0.63 per cent, to 832.22.

On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar was quoted at 90.49-54 yen, up from Wednesday's 5 pm quote of 90.36-39 yen.

Tokyo stocks weak on Toyota loss forecast

Tokyo  - Stocks in Tokyo closed lower Wednesday, after Toyota Motor Corp, Japan's largest automaker, projected its first operating loss in 71 years for the current business year.

Following a slump on Wall Street which was dragged down by falling US home prices, the benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average was down 206.68 points, or 2.37 per cent to 8,517.1.

The broader Topix index of all first-section issues fell 21.74 points, or 2.56 per cent, to 826.99.

Toyota said Monday it expected an operating loss for the business year through March 31. Stock markets in Tokyo were closed for a public holiday on Tuesday.

Toshiba to build high-efficiency motor factory in Vietnam

Tokyo  - The Japanese electronic giant Toshiba Corporation plans to build a new manufacturing and sales base in Vietnam to meet growing demand for high-efficiency motors in the global market, the company announced Wednesday.

The new company, Toshiba Industrial Products Asia Co Ltd, will be located in Vietnam's Dong Nai province, and will manufacture high-efficiency industrial motors rated at under 100 horsepower, plus their parts, Toshiba said.

The company will build a factory at Amata Industrial Park in Dong Nai province, on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City. The start of construction is scheduled for April 2009, and the plant will come on line in September 2010, the company said.
