Hemis monastery hosts vibrant festival in Ladakh

Ladakhi youth come forward for a cleaning driveLeh (Jammu and Kashmir), July 14 : Large number of devotees and tourists are headed towards Hemis Monastery of Ladakh which is geared up for the three-day Hemis festival, which commenced today.

This festival is a time for great rejoicing for Buddhists across Ladakh region as well as many other monasteries elsewhere in India, Bhutan and Tibet.

Hemis festival is one of the most important festivals for the Buddhists, celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Padamsambhava or Guru Rimpoche.

White water river-rafting becoming popular in Kashmir

Young Kashmiris prefer café lattes, talk of careers, education to separatism

Jammu & KashmirSrinagar, July 12 : A decade and a half ago, it was virtually impossible to think of people, let alone youngsters sipping a cup of coffee in a cafeteria here, given the clamour for separatism.

For almost two decades, the region was in the grip of a violent insurgency by militants opposed to Indian rule.

Now, in central Srinagar groups of young men and women can be found sipping cappuccinos and cafe lattes, and listening to the Bee Gees and Bryan Adams.

Men wear jeans and T-shirts, while women wear traditional but elegant salwar kameezes. There are very few headscarves.

Jammu, July 12 : A fresh batch of 872 pilgrims left for the Amarnath yatra from the base camp of Bhagwati Nagar early this morning.

Hizbul Mujahideen commander arrested in Handwara

Srinagar July 11 : In a joint operation Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Rashtriya Rifles has arrested a Hizbul Mujahideen militant from Handwara District’s Lach forests.

The Handwara police had received a tip-off regarding the presence of militants in the area.

Accordingly, Handwara police launched a joint operation with the troops of 30-Rashtriya Rifles. They cordoned the area but the militant opened fire on joint search party of the police, triggering a fierce firefight.
