Pak spy agency ISI closes its political wing

Islamabad, Nov 23 : Pakistani intelligence agency, the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) has reportedly decided to disband its ‘political wing’, which for the last over three decades, had been actively involved in monitoring and managing political activities inside and outside the government.

The move is expected to have far reaching effects on the country’s politics and democratic set-up, reported the Dawn.

Not only the ‘political wing’ was being disbanded, the officials working there have been given other assignments linked to the agency’s original role of counter-intelligence, the paper quoted a reliable source as saying.

Three Pakistani policemen killed in militant attack

PakistanIslamabad - Three policemen were killed and one injured Saturday when Islamic militants targeted a security check post in Pakistan's North Western Frontier Province, an official said.

The attack took place at 3:45 am in the Lora area of Bannu district, about 200 kilometres south of the provincial capital, Peshawar.

"Around two dozen or more Taliban besieged the post and fired several rockets at it," said a police officer Farid Khan. "Our officers offered tough resistance but they were outnumbered by the militants."

Suspected US drone strike kills four in Pakistan Islamabad  - A suspected US pilotless aircraft on Saturday targeted a militant hideout in Pakistan's restive tribal region along the border with Afghanistan, killing four people and injuring six, a Pakistani intelligence official said.

Two hellfire missiles demolished the house of local Taliban leader Khaliq Noor in Ali Khel village outside Mir Ali, the main town in the tribal district of North Waziristan, a known sanctuary of Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters.

Pak Govt considering abolition of death sentenceIslamabad, Nov 22: The Pakistan Government is considering a proposal to abolish the death penalty in the country, bringing a ray of hope for death row Indian prisoner, Sarabjit Singh.

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior Rehman Malik informed the National Assembly in a written statement that the federal Law Ministry is processing the proposal.

Malik also told the House that 660 Pakistanis aere currently imprisoned in Indian jails, while 503 Indians were being held in Pakistani jails.

Former Special Services Group head could have been killed as Taliban'' revenge

Pakistan army flexes muscles to shoot down drone aircraft

Pakistan FlagIslamabad - Pakistan's army on Friday carried out a training exercise in which pilotless aircraft drones were shot down by anti-craft guns and short range surface-to-air missiles, a military statement said.

The exercise was carried out as public pressure on the government in Islamabad is increasing to use force to halt air raids by US drones that target suspected militant hideouts in Pakistan's tribal region.

"The elements of army air defence demonstrated their shooting skills by targeting the drones flying at different altitudes," said the statement.
