India-china-flagNew Delhi - India on Monday relaxed a ban on the import of Chinese toys, saying goods certified by independent globally-recognized agencies would be allowed into the country.

A notification issued by India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade said shipments would be allowed if the the importer produced a certificate stating that the toys conformed to certain internationally-accepted quality standards.

India mapNew Delhi - Parliamentary elections in India will be held in five phases between April 16 and May 13, India's Election Commission announced Monday.

A new Lok Sabha, or lower House of Parliament, will be constituted before June 2, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami said at a press briefing.

The term of the current United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh ends in mid-May and a new government will be constituted after the election results are announced on May 16.

The elections will be held in five phases on April 16, 23, 30, May 7 and 13, they said, adding that the new government will take office on June 2.

"We plan to invite bids in the next few days (and) have worked out the modalities for that, which now needs SEBI approval," he said.

The funding from this investor will lend further financial stability to Satyam, added Karnik.

"The global slowdown has become a big problem. It is a problem for middle class families like us. We are forced to cut down our budget because of the price hike in gold which is an important element of our weddings," said Arindam Day, a customer.
