Surendranagar (Gujarat), Sept 20 : Villagers in Gujarat''s Surendarnagar are facing hardship as floodwaters have submerged more than 20 villages.

Though more than 4000 people have been evacuated to safer places, and many more displaced villagers await succor.

The entire region has been converted into a virtual island and the standing water has damaged crops and entire fields.

Army has also been called to carry out rescue operations. Fire brigade officials have also been pressed into action.

New Delhi - At least 15 people were killed and more than a dozen were sickened Saturday after inhaling toxic gas while trying to steal fuel from a freight train in eastern India's Assam state, news reports said.

The incident took place near Diphu railway station in the Karbi Anglong district, about 290 kilometres east of Assam's main city of Guwahati, the IANS news agency reported.

The freight train carrying high-speed diesel and petrol was stopped by a group of people in a isolated jungle area, railway official SS Narayanan was quoted as saying.

New Delhi, Sept 20 : Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh chaired a meeting of the Planning Commission today to discuss a draft Integrated Energy Policy document.

Describing that energy is a crucial input in development and growth of the country, Dr. Singh said: “With very large energy requirement, we are likely to be increasingly import-dependent. This makes us vulnerable to uncertainty of international prices and also reliability of supplies.”

New Delhi, Sept 20: Armed with a permit for global nuclear trade, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will leave next week for the United States and France hoping to seal atomic energy deals and discuss cooperation in defence and counter-terrorism.

New Delhi, Sept 20: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Congress-led Central Government of not acting tough on terrorism.

"Four-year term of Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi has not only encouraged terrorism, but also allowed the terrorists from the other side of the border to execute their plans in India. In the name of Indian Mujahideen and SIMI, has given birth to such terrorists in India, the biggest crime is of this government," said senior party leader LK Advani in a public rally in Karol Bagh, a blast site of September 13 attacks, which left at least 23 dead.
