India, Bulgaria review security related bilateral issues

New Delhi, June 11 : India and Bulgaria held wide ranging discussions on various security related bilateral issues, here today.

The Indian delegation was headed by Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, while the Bulgarian side was led by their Deputy Minister of Interior Goran Yonov.

The talks were aimed at reviewing the initiatives and progress outlined under the Agreement on Cooperation in Combating Organized Crime, International Terrorism and Illegal Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, the two countries had signed in 1994, as also for developing newer areas of cooperation on issues of mutual concern.

Japan's Daiichi Sankyo to acquire India's top drugmaker Ranbaxy

Tokyo/New Delhi - Japan's pharmaceutical Daiichi Sankyo Co reached an agreement with India's Ranbaxy Laboratories to acquire a majority stake, the Japanese company announced Wednesday.

The acquisition was estimated to be worth between 3.4 and 4.6 billion dollars.

Daiichi Sankyo intends to boost cost competitiveness in effective use of manufacturing as well as research and development facilities, especially in India, through the acquisition, the company said.

"While both companies will closely cooperate to explore how to fully optimize our growth opportunities, we will respect Ranbaxy's autonomy as a standalone company as well," Daiichi Sankyo Co President & CEO Takashi Shoda said in a statement.

Italy tightens security for Bush visit

Rome - Italian authorities deployed Wednesday some 10,000 soldiers and police in Rome ahead of US President George W Bush's scheduled afternoon arrival in the capital.

The US presidential plane, Air Force One, was scheduled to arrive at Rome's Ciampino military airport at around 1400 GMT on a flight from Germany.

Bush's visit includes meetings with Italian leaders on Thursday and with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican on Friday.

First Lady Laura Bush, who is accompanying her husband, is scheduled to deliver a speech at the Rome-based headquarters of the UN World Food Programme (WFP).

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano is scheduled to receive Bush at the presidential Quirinale Palace on Thursday morning.
