Rahul Gandhi to visit Amethi today

Amethi, Aug 21 : AICC General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP from Amethi Rahul Rahul Gandhi to visit Amethi todayGandhi will arrive here today for a three-day visit.

During his visit, Rahul is scheduled to review the progress of various developmental schemes launched by him in the past.

He will also attend a meeting of the district vigilance and monitoring committee in Sultanpur, and interact with people in villages.

On Friday, he will inaugurate a Sanskrit Vidyalaya in Tikarmafi and lay the foundation of various roads to be built at a cost of Rs 10 crore at Bhadar.

The state government has recently issued a draft notification according to which all ten-year-old commercial vehicles plying on Delhi roads as well as those going in and out of the NCR region will be banned.

Violence erupts in Jammu over shrine row

Jammu & KashmirJammu, August 20 : Hindu activists demanding restoration of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) went on rampage in parts of Jammu on Wednesday.

Authorities in Jammu region and Kashmir valley in the State re-imposed curfew today following violent protests in various parts on Tuesday evening.

Defying curfew protesters clashed with security personnel, seized vehicles and set them on fire. A police post in Janipur area of the city was rampaged and then set ablaze.

A private car of a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was also burned by the protesters.

Activists in Mumbai protest TATA''s upcoming port in Orissa

Mumbai, August 20 : Greenpeace activists in Mumbai staged a demonstration outside the headquarters of Tata company on Wednesday against a port that the company is planning to set up in Orissa.

The activists claimed that the building of the port would adversely affect the turtle population in the region.

The building of the mega port at Dhamra in Orissa will destroy the turtles taking an entire fragile and significant eco system with them.

An Indian prisoner reaches home after spending 20 years in Pakistan jail

Rasoolpur (Uttar Pradesh), August 20 : Vishwanath, an Indian prisoner who is mentally-disabled reached his native village Rasoolpur in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh today after spending 20 years in Pakistan Jail.

Police handed over Vishwanath to his family on Monday evening.

It is believed that Vishwanath has become mentally unstable; allegedly due to torture and atrocities he faced in the prison, where he was lodged in Pakistan.

"They beat me up on one day and locked me for another five days. They give me one square meal a day," said Vishwanath.

Vishwanath''s father says he looked for his missing son at various places but couldn''t find him.

Japanese naval ships to visit India from Aug. 23-26

New Delhi, Aug 20 : To strengthen security and strategic ties, two guided missile destroyers and one training ship of Japan’s Maritime Self-Defence Force will take part in an exercise with Indian Navy from August 23-26 on the western seaboard.

On August 26 they will be participating in PASSEX along with Indian Fleet Ships comprising Delhi class and Corvette. The PASSEX would involve OOW Manoeuvres, Flying Exercise, Cross Deck Flying, Photo Exercise, Underway Replenishment, Jackstay and Steam Past.

Japanese Defence Ships Kashima (Training Ship), Asagiri and Umigiri are visiting Mumbai from August 23 – 26. Both JDS Asagiri and Umigiri are frontline destroyers with a displacement of 2500 Tonnes and carry Sea Hawk Helicopter.
