AGP joins hands with BJP in Assam

The political scenario in Assam took a new color when The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) returned to the NDA on Thursday, with a saying “to free Assam from the tyranny of the Congress misrule”.

A BJP-AGP joint statement released shortly after the alliance was confirmed said that “permanent solution of basic issues of Assam like implementation of the Assam Accord, sealing of the India-Bangladesh border, issuing photo identity cards after updating the National Register of Citizens, permanent solution of flood problem, bringing peace in Assam through dialogue with militant outfits and granting ST status to six deserving communities of the state as recommended by the Assam assembly”.

President Patil’s visit brings hope to northeast

President Patil during her five-day visit inaugurated several infrastructural and developmental projects in the region.

In the first leg of her visit, President Patil was in Assam. She laid foundation stone of the Tezpur Medical College. Just a few months ago Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had inaugurated the Jorhat Medical College.

Guwahati students rally against serial blastsGuwahati, Nov 12: Hundreds of students took to streets here on Tuesday to protest against the recent serial blasts in the state that killed over 80 people and left over 300 injured.

The protest was organised under the aegis of the All Assam Students Union (AASU).

The students, holding banners and placards marched down the streets of the city, which was recently rocked by serial blasts.

Blaming the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh for the blasts, the protesters said, they wanted to put pressure to make the government to take action against militants.

Assam blasts: Police say finger points to NDFB, HUJI involvement

AssamNew Delhi, Nov. 10 : With the Government of Assam having already announced plans to enhance its security apparatus to counter terrorism in the state, the investigations into the October 30 serial bombings have taken on a new hue with evidence pointing to the involvement of the rebel National Democratic Front of Bodoland
(NDFB) and the Bangladesh-based Harkat-ul-Jehad-al-Islami.

According to a report in The Hindu, two of the three Maruti 800 cars used as bombs were purchased by the NDFB less than six weeks before the attacks that claimed the lives of seventy-seven people.
