Railways first quarter freight earnings is up by 8.33% Indian Railways has informed that it has carried 218.35 million tonnes of commodity freight during April-June quarter of the financial year 2010-11. For the similar quarter in the previous year, it was reported to be 213.24 million tonnes of commodity freight.

That means, the company has posted an increment of 2.4% in its commodity freight in the Q1 of the current year against its like period a year ago. In a statement, the Railways officials have informed that the revenue of the organization has stood at Rs 14,915 crore from the commodity freight traffic in the three months period of April to June in the ongoing fiscal year.

It was found out to be Rs 13,769 crore during the first quarter of the previous financial year from the same purpose. According to the analysts, this hike in the earnings indicates that, there has been a per tonne realization as well.

In this quarter, the earnings have surpassed the volume growth. Rs 4,870 crore has been collected by railways from freight traffic in Q1 of this year in the total earning.
