Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 4nm chip that can revolutionize affordable 5G smartphones segment

Qualcomm has unveiled Snapdragon 4 Generation 2 4 nanometer processor that will be powering affordable 5G smartphones by the end of the year. Qualcomm processors are behind feature rich and multi-tasking smartphones that support faster storage and RAM. Processor is an important component of any handheld device and Qualcomm produces processors for high-end and affordable devices. The company just unveiled Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 (SM4450) which would be powering devices with improved 3GPP Release 16 version of 5G. The 4nm chip is the first in Snapdragon 4-series processors.

The Kryo CPU based on 64-bit architecture has two performance cores (up to 2.2 GHz) and six efficiency cores (up to 2 GHz). It can support memory modules with LP-DDR5x memory up to 3200 MHz or LP-DDR4x memory up to 2133 MHz. The new processor has 10 percent performance boost compared to the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1

The information about Qualcomm’s SM4450 was first leaked online in April 2023. Qualcomm Snapdragon 5G Mobile Platforms feature a comprehensive modem-to-antenna system solution for 5G multimode devices. The system is well-optimized to offer better efficiency for longer battery life. Telecom companies across the globe are covering more area under 5G network and consumers are happy with faster speed and better connectivity. However, majority of users who have bought their smartphone more than a year earlier, will have to buy a new device that supports 5G. With SM4450, Qualcomm will be catering to fast-growing and high volume, affordable smartphone segment.

The new chip also offers Quick Charge technology that can have a mobile device charged up from 0 to 50% in just 15 minutes. This will be an interesting feature as many companies have started offering fast charging with full charge under 30 minutes. Adding that feature in affordable device segment will be a major selling point. Qualcomm hasn’t mentioned anything regarding the GPU performance.

As per a detailed review published by AnandTech, “Qualcomm says that the new SoC offers faster autofocus support than the 4 Gen 1, as well as an updated electronic image stabilization feature. The company’s new entry-level SoC for smartphones and other devices incorporates some hardware updates that should modestly boost performance for the most cost-sensitive segment of the mobile market, as well as bringing Qualcomm’s overall Snapdragon product stack into closer alignment by supporting more recent 5G standards.”

TopNews will keep an eye on the smartphones that might use Qualcomm’s SM4450. As per reports, Redmi and Vivo could be launching smartphone based on this chip in the second half of the year.
