Punjab records 35-40 percent polling in Panchayat electionsAmritsar, May 26 : About 35 to 40 per cent polling has been reported in Punjab in the second phase of Panchayat elections held today.

Polling was conducted in about 12,000 Panchayats. Each Panchayat has about 8 to 10 Village Heads. Those elected will further elect the Village Headman from among themselves.

These elections are not contested on a party basis and symbols of political parties are not used.

In the first phase on May 12, direct elections were conducted to elect members of Panchayat Samitis and Zilla Parishads, when 2500 members for 141 Panchayat Samitis and 324 members for 20 Zilla Parishads were elected.

In the third phase these elected Village Heads will elect the Village Headman. (ANI)
