New Delhi - Rahul Gandhi, heir of India's powerful Gandhi dynasty, filed his candidacy Saturday for the country's general elections that begin mid-April, officials said.
Gandhi, 38-year-old son of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi who heads the ruling Congress Party, filed his nomination papers for the Amethi parliamentary constituency in northern Uttar Pradesh state.
Rahul drove to the Sultanpur district headquarters 80 kilometres east of state capital Lucknow in a cavalcade of cars amid cheering and showering of rose petals by Congress party activists.
Ahmedabad, Mar 31 : Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for trying to make the Mumbai terror attacks as a poll issue, saying the saffron party was indulging in the politics of division.
“They are talking about terrorism. When they were in government, they did not talk about it. We consider the whole country as one and try to unite the people. Our opponents indulge in the politics of dividing the nation,” Gandhi said while addressing a rally here.
He claimed that ‘some parties’ were trying to do politics of religion.
Chennai, Mar 29 : The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, last night finalised a seat-sharing arrangement with its allies, the Congress, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
According to the deal, the Congress will contest 15 Tamil Nadu seats and one seat in Puducherry, the VCK, a Dalit party, got two seats and the IUML got one.
Lucknow, March 27 : Former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin has been named as Congress' candidate from Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad constituency for 15th Lok Sabha elections.
Azaruddin's name was announced among the fourteen names declared on Friday by the Congress party.
Sanjay Singh, who belongs to the royal family of Amethi, is the Congress candidate from his pocket borough Sultanpur.
