2009 polls: Congress places on itself the task of fulfilling 29 promises

CongressNew Delhi, Mar. 26 (ANI): A casual glance through the Congress Party’s latest manifesto indicates that it has placed on itself a huge and onerous task of fulfilling 29 promises as part of its nation-building endeavour between 2009 and 2014, should it emerge victorious in this year’s general elections.

The 21-page manifesto starts off with a pledge to ensure a “life of security, dignity and prosperity” for every Indian citizen, and claims “we have delivered on promises made in our manifesto of 2004 in a very substantial measure”.

Congress slams Uddhav Thackeray''s remarks on PM

Uddhav-ThackerayNew Delhi, Mar 22 : The Congress Party has expressed regret over the alleged derogatory remarks of Shiv Sena party chief Uddhav Thackeray on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

According to media reports, Thackeray referred to the Prime Minister and the United Progressive Alliance in a derogatory manner while addressing a public rally in Mumbai on March 20.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari has urged the Election Commission to take serious note of the incident.

Congress snubs paltry offer of seats by RJD

Congress, RJDNew Delhi/Hyderabad, Mar 20 : Congress has said it was deeply hurt by the deal cut out by its old ally, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), by offering only three out of 40 parliamentary seats in Bihar.

"There is a deep sense of hurt at offering us a paltry three to four seats. Certainly, we as a party are entitled to assert that we should be given many more seats and certainly we do not accept that figure. I think both those stands are fully compatible," said Abhishek Singhvi, party spokesman.

On Tuesday, the RJD and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) announced a pact with RJD getting 25 seats and LJP 12.

Congress launches advertisement campaign

Aiming to spice up its election campaign, the Congress party has also bought the rights to "Jai Ho," the Oscar-winning song from "Slumdog Millionaire."

Talking to reporters here Party spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said that the campaign focuses on the party''s achievement down the years.

The Samajwadi Party earlier announced candidates for 65 constituencies, saying his party was ready to reconsider its list of already announced candidates for 65 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh if Congress comes down from its demand.
