Pets need special care in winter

Pets need special care in winterSome pet owners assume that fur of their pets is enough to keep them safe from the cold weather. BC SPCA urged pet owners to make proper arrangements to save their pets from cold weather.

Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the BC SPCA said that because we live in a milder part of the province, we often don't think about the serious risks that cold weather poses to our pets.

She added that people should take steps to ensure their animals are appropriately cared for; they should bring them indoors, and if that isn't possible, they should make sure that they have insulated housing that is protected from winds.

Along with adequate and appropriate shelter, a dog must have ready access to fresh water. Dogs also require more food during this weather because generally animals burn more calories in cold weather.

The SPCA recommended that the pads of dogs' feet should be cleaned regularly because snow and ice can irritate the foot pads. Road salt can increase the irritation and its intake when pets lick their paws can lead to health issues. Pet-safe, non-corrosive de-icing compounds and propylene-based antifreeze should be used by pet-owners.
