Vodafone CEO Colao discusses 'Digital India' with R.S. Prasad

New Delhi, Feb. 4 - The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UK-based telecom major Vodafone, Vittorio Colao, met Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad, and discusses Digital India project.

Colao told Prasad that Vodafone could play an important role in providing the last mile connectivity by improving its network and building broadband penetration.

"It was an excellent meeting. We have very good alignment on the 'Digital India' project. We think we can have a great role on Digital India," said Colao.

Cabinet approves largest ever spectrum auction to get Rs 64,840 crore

New Delhi - The Union Cabinet on Monday approved the largest ever telecom spectrum auction that is targeted to fetch at least Rs 64,840 crore from the sale next month.

The government will sell 380.75 megahertz of second generation (2G) spectrum in three bands -- the premium 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 800 MHz. Spectrum in 2100 MHz may also be put on auction simultaneously after Defence Ministry vacates it.

Congress should introspect instead of pointing finger at others: RS Prasad

"Maharashtra needs change. And like the people of Maharashtra voted for us the during Lok Sabha elections, I am confident that they will vote for us during the assembly elections as well. I am confident that BJP will form a majority government in Maharashtra," he told a press conference here.

Telecom Min seeks Rs 6,997 cr fund for projects this fiscal

Ravi-Shankar-PrasadNew Delhi: The Telecom Ministry has sought additional funds of Rs 6,997 crore in the budget for various projects that are to be rolled out during the current financial year.

Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is learnt to have approached Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for additional funds to carry out schemes committed under Universal Services Obligation fund scheme.

This included the national optical fibre network (NOFN) which aims to connect 50,000 village panchayat at the end of current fiscal and total of 2.5 lakh panchayats by 2016-17.

Quality of service, a priority: Telecom minister

"Telecom was in the news for all the wrong reasons. My priorities will be to set things right. I will focus mainly on two things -- quality of services and investors' confidence restoration," he told reporters after taking charge of the ministry here.

"We will focus to establish broadband highway," he added.

The new government wants to have an investment climate that is based on "fair policy and transparent and non-discriminatory regime", Prasad told the media soon after assuming office.

However, he said any extraneous considerations or corruption would be dealt with very seriously.

Don't rake leaders' private life in public: BJP tells Congress

"There are several family issues of the Nehru-Gandhi family that we are aware of. Some of it is also recorded in documents..." BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said Friday.

"But we will not discuss it in public because we have a standard," he said.

BJP demands security for top leaders

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders also submitted a memorandum to Shinde over the issue.

The BJP leaders quoted media reports saying there were terror threats to their leaders.

"The BJP is extremely concerned about these developments. Even earlier, there have been threats," BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

BJP asks Madhya Pradesh leader to withdraw remarks
