He said, "Because of this the price of petroleum products will also go up."

He asked: "would BJP be doing something new that was not done by the Congress government?"

Answering to questions about onions costs going upto rupees 100 per kg in October, he said "This could happen."

Mani Shankar AiyarNew Delhi, Feb 26 : Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar today said that the North Eastern Region (NER) Vision 2020 document outlines the goals, identifies the challenges and suggests implementation strategies for various sectors for peace and prosperity of the NER.

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Aiyar said, "The Vision document suggests regional and sectoral implementation strategies for promoting the socio-economic prosperity of the region, with a view to growth rates in the NER catching up with the overall national growth rates."

India, Afghanistan sign MoU on local governance

Mani Shankar Aiyar New Delhi, May 17 : Union Minister for Panchayati Raj Mani Shankar Aiyar  Kabul on Saturday on a three-day visit, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Local Governance was signed between the two countries.

The visit is at the invitation of Minister for Rural Rehabilitation and Development of Afghanistan Mohammad Ehsan Zia.

In his opening meeting with the Afghan Minister, Aiyar discussed local governance matters and how the Indian experiences of the Panchayati Raj decentralization could have synergies with the proposed sub-national governance structures and processes in Afghanistan.

National convention of heads of panchayats to begin today

Union Minister for Panchayati Raj Mani Shankar AiyarNew Delhi, Apr 22 : Union Minister for Panchayati Raj Mani Shankar Aiyar will inaugurate a three-day national convention of presidents of zilla parishads and intermediate panchayats here today.

The convention is being organised to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the 73rd amendment of the Constitution giving birth to the Panchayati Raj system.

The amendment provides for reservation of one-third seats for women in panchayats.

Around 7000 elected representatives of panchayats from across the country are expected to attend the convention.

Mani Shankar Aiyar Hospitalized!

Mani Shanker AiyarChennai: Mani Shanker Aiyar, the Union Minister for Panchayati Raj was admitted in the Apollo Hospitals. He complained of discomfort after he arrived at the airport on Wednesday.

He was admitted in the intensive care unit for the evaluation of chest pain.

According to hospital bulletin, the minister is being treated for acute coronary syndrome. His general condition is reported to be stable, but he needs to be under regular monitoring.
