Cervical cancer vaccine should be cheaper: Nobel laureate

Harald zur HausenKolkata, Dec 2 :With cervical cancer the second most common cancer among women worldwide, Nobel laureate in medicine Harald zur Hausen Wednesday said here that the cost of vaccination in India should undergo drastic reduction to make this life-saving vaccine available to a maximum number of people.

"The cost of vaccination for cervical cancer is still very expensive in India. Its price needs to be drastically reduced, especially in countries like India, where the risk of this disease is threatening," Hausen told an interactive session organised here by the Cancer Foundation of India (CFI).

Harald zur HausenBerlin - Harald zur Hausen, a German virologist who shared the Nobel prize for medicine on Monday, was honoured for his research which led to the development of a vaccine against cervical cancer.

Born in Gelsenkirchen in the West of Germany, zur Hausen studied medicine in Bonn, Hamburg and Dusseldorf. After graduating in December 1960 he devoted himself to science.

As a young researcher, he investigated the links between viral infections and the development of specific types of cancer in humans.

In 1970 he made his scientific breakthrough when he detected the Epstein-Barr virus in tissue samples of two human tumors.
