The victory allowed Djokovic, who won the title in Paris in 2009, to keep alive his hopes of edging Spanish star Rafael Nadal for the No. 1 spot in the rankings, with the two players gearing up to end the competition at the season-ending tournament in London.

Ferrer played tough in both sets, but he was unable to pull off the win.

Federer won a tense tiebreak of the second set but still slumped to a 4-6, 7-6(5), 3-6 loss to Frenchman Gael Monfils after two hours and nine minutes, reports Xinhua.

Federer, 32, is battling to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals for the 12th consecutive year.

Federer recovered from a 3-5 deficit in the second set to force a tiebreak. He went on to win four straight points from 3-5 in the tiebreak to level the match.

"I'm extremely disappointed not to be able to participate in the Capitala World Tennis Championship due to an injury," said Tsonga, the 2008 Australian Open finalist who will now be on the back foot in his preparation for the Grand Slam starting January 18 in Melbourne.
