Pakistan’s “halal” Facebook is in dire financial strait
The "halal" version of social-networking platform Facebook, which was launched in Pakistan after in wake of ban on Facebook, is struggling to collect funds to remain afloat.
Emerging reports say that MillatFacebook (MFB) has sent out emails to its members requesting them to donate money to enable the Facebook-rival to pay for its U. S.-based servers.
The emails say, "We are asking for a contribution from you that will help us towards our goal of keeping this Peaceful Social Network run forever and defeat blasphemer facebook."
The emails also state that MillatFacebook is spending thousands of dollars to run the site, which is faced a shortfall of $581 in server payments in December alone.
Umar Zaheer Meer, the website's Chief Operating Officer, admitted that the fundraising drive was not producing the desired results.
MillatFacebook, which was launched nearly two years back after authorities banned Facebook over blasphemous cartoons of Prophet Mohammed, has nearly five lakh members. At the time of its launch in May 2010, its creators had promised that it would have any paid advertisements. But, it now hosts advertisements.
According to the MillatFacebook team, their main objective was to provide a social-networking platform for all Muslims as well as nice, decent and sophisticated people of all religions to team up and make a network.
