One big question remains: What will Michelle wear?Washington  - While political junkies worry about Barack Obama's policies and plans, fashionistas are obsessed with another weighty matter: What will Michelle Obama wear to the bevy of inauguration balls on Tuesday?

The incoming first lady has already drawn admirers for her sophisticated but low-key style that mixes ready-to-wear pieces from such US shopping mall favourites as Banana Republic and J Crew with young designers and Chicagoans, like Maria Pinto.

At a height of about 1.52 metres, Obama is one of the tallest first ladies ever, and favours simple sheaths.

The internet is awash with speculation and potential designs, with particularly intense discussions on a blog, Mrs-O. org.

Women's Wear Daily solicited sketches from famous designers like Monique Lhuillier and Isaac Mizirahi. Ideas ranged from ruby-red full-skirted ball gowns to slim emerald-green sheaths to over-the-top patriotic red, white and blue numbers.

The Washington Post's fashion critic even had readers submit ideas.

Michelle Obama's inauguration wear could include more than one gown in addition to a chic suit and overcoat combo for the chilly noon swearing-in.

The first couple will attend 10 inaugural balls after Obama is sworn-in on Tuesday, but only Michelle Obama herself, a handful of staff and the lucky fashion designers know what she'll be wearing. (dpa)
