Ofcom asks ISPs to provide more information on traffic management
UK's telecom regulator, Ofcom has warned the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the UK to offer more information relating to traffic management that is used to curb excess demand by customers.
The regulator also said that if more information is not provided voluntarily then the regulator may also consider enforcing actions to make the ISPs be clearer about the traffic management. Ofcom said that ISPs should inform customers about any services that are deliberately prohibited.
It also said that ISPs should also state their average broadband speeds instead of advertising the capability. ISPs signed a cross-industry agreement to reveal some of this information in a "Key Facts Indicator".
"It currently does not go far enough and needs to be made clearer and easier to understand. If improvements are not made, Ofcom may use its powers to introduce a minimum level of consumer information," it said.
The European lawmakers have provided more power to the regulator to make ISPs to change the way they present themselves to customers earlier this year. Ofcom is concerned over ISPs using traffic-management systems to target competing services in a manner in which the customers are not aware of the changes.
