Nokia files for patent of new cellphones’ “light messaging” capability

Nokia light messagingAccording to New Scientist magazine, Nokia has filed a patent on a new class of cellphones, with the singular “light messaging” capability, which would help users send a text message with a background color that would explicitly express their mood!

The system seeking patent would transmit the user’s emotions via the light-messaging cellphone, along with a sent message; and the emotion at the time of the message sent will be indicated by way of a suitable “light” flashed on the receiver’s phone.

The system functions thus: A user, while sending a text message chooses an apposite mood from the software options of the phone, with the color corresponding to that mood being embedded with the sent message. As such, the receiver’s phone illuminates an LED display indicating the appropriate color along with the message; thereby conveying the sender’s mood!

Talking about the system in its patent filing, Nokia said: “Light messaging allows a user to express a mood while having an ongoing call or while sending a text message. The light messaging may set the tone of the communication. People react to lights and colors very deeply and emotionally.”

Accompanying the US patent application, is the opinion of the “light messaging” inventor, Nokia’s Teppo Jokinen, who has noted that the “light messaging” would “enrich and improve user experiences.”
