Pakistan defends arrest of opposition leaders

Islamabad, Sep 26 : The Pakistan Government has defended the arrests of opposition activists opposing the re-election of President Pervez Musharraf in the wake of an unusually harsh statement by the US over the developments.

The US embassy in Pakistan on Monday said that the arrest of opposition leaders as "extremely disturbing and confusing for the "friends of Pakistan", and urged the Musharraf regime to free the detained men.

Child expert warns that Shane Warne's kids could be harmed by spousal feud

Sydney, Sept.26 : A child expert has warned both Shane Warne and his ex-wife Simone Callahan to end their public feud over an alleged affair for the sake of their three children.

The Australian Counselling Association's Philip Armstrong said the Warne's tit-for-tat claims over the end of their relationship could damage their children Brooke, 10, Jackson, 8 and Summer, 5.

Armstrong was particularly scathing of the tell-all interview Simone gave to New Idea about an alleged affair revealed by yet another wayward text message.

China bans sexually suggestive ads on radio, TV

New Delhi, Sept.26 : China's broadcasting watchdog has banned all sexually suggestive advertising on radio and television.

Commercials featuring sexually suggestive language or behaviour or featuring scantly dressed women were "detrimental to society," the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) said in a circular on Tuesday.

Heavy rain disrupts work at Tata small car plant in Singur

Singur/Kolkata (West Bengal), Sept. 26 : Work at an upcoming small car plant at Singur in West Bengal has been badly hit following water logging due to incessant rains.

The halting of operations has left most of workers facing a difficult situation.

"Because of the flooding at the project, work is held up. Contractors say there is no work, and therefore, there is no pay. For the last three days, we have had nothing to eat. What to do?" asks Sahib, a contracted worker.

Ford launches a new model in India

Chennai, Sept. 26 : Premium carmaker Ford launched the Ford Fiesta1.6 Fida in Chennai on Tuesday.

The new edition with a 1.6 litre duratec engine is available in new copper rust and panther black.

The car is priced at 6.6 lakhs.

Scoot Mcormack, Vice President (Marketing), Ford India, put the sales figures for the earlier version at 55,000, and said he expected good demand during the forthcoming festive season.

Study reveals how plants use their own network to chat

Washington, Sept 26 : Researchers from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) have found in a new study how plants use their own communication system to warn each other of impending danger.

Herbal plants such as strawberry, clover, reed and ground elder naturally form networks.

Individual plants remain connected with each other for a certain period of time by means of runners.

These connections, very similar to computer networks, enable the plants to share information with each other via internal channels.
