Philippines President to arrive today

Mumbai, Oct 4 : Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will arrive here on a three-day visit today.

Arroyo's visit is the first to India by a Philippines President in over ten years. The last was by the then President, Fidel Ramos, in March 1997.

During her visit to New Delhi, Arroyo will call on President Pratibha Patil, who will host a banquet in her honour on Friday.

On the same day, Arroyo, accompanied by seven cabinet ministers, will also call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to hold bilateral talks.

Burmese soldiers were “ordered” to kill monks

London, Oct 4 : A Burmese army major has revealed that secret codes were issued ordering the military to shoot and kill protesting monks in Rangoon last week.

Major Hla Lin, who disobeyed the order and fled before protests began in the capital, claimed there were divisions within the military, and many officers were horrified at being forced to crush the protesting monks.

London, Oct 4 : The ongoing inquest into Princess Diana’s death has further dismissed controversial claims about her being pregnant with boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed’s child at the time of her death, by revealing that she was on contraceptive pills.

Lord Justice Scott Baker said that while it may never be possible to prove “100 per cent” whether Diana was pregnant, the inquest jury would hear “intimate details of her personal life” which appeared to show she was not.

Eating apples and onions reduces pancreatic cancer risk

Washington, Oct 4 : Consuming flavonol-rich foods like apples and onions reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer, a new study conducted by a group of international researchers has revealed.

Previously, the most consistent inverse association was found between flavonols, especially quercetin in apples and lung cancer.

While found in many plants, flavonols are found in high concentrations in apples, onions, tea, berries, kale, and broccoli. Quercetin is most plentiful in apples and onions.

Earth-like planet likely forming 424 light-years away

Washington, Oct 4 : NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope has revealed and Earth like planet forming 424 light-years away in a star system called HD 113766.

Agency astronomers have discovered a huge belt of warm dust – enough to build a Mars-size planet or larger – swirling around a distant star that is just slightly more massive than our Sun.

ONGC To Use Up $1.4 Bln On Field Redevelopment

ONGCMumbai: Indian state-run explorer Oil and Natural Gas (ONGC) will expend Rs 5713 crore on the second development phase of a key field off India’s west coast.

In a declaration, the company said that the renovation would aid ONGC’s Mumbai High South field to fabricate 22 million tonnes of incremental oil.

“At current crude prices, the additional produce is valued at 530 billion rupees,” the company said.
