Munich's Rensing dismisses Beckenbauer criticism

Bayern Munich LogoMunich - Bayern Munich goalkeeper Michael Rensing has dismissed criticism of his performances from club president Franz Beckenbauer as nonsense amid speculation that the Bundesliga champions may be looking to sign a new man between the posts.

"His criticism is nonsense," Rensing told Thursday's edition of the Bild daily.

Earlier this week, Beckenbauer had named Rensing's performance in Saturday's league match at VfB Stuttgart "amateurish" and blamed him for Stuttgart's late 2-2 equalizer.

But Rensing would none of it, saying he was fouled in the incident and that that criticism was not appropriate, "especially from people who have never played in goal and want to be wise guys."

Rensing, 24, became Munich's number one goalkeeper this season after the retirement of Oliver Kahn. He has not always been at his best but insisted that "I am the number one and have confirmed this status on the pitch."

Former Bayern player Paul Breitner said that Rensing was treated unfairly and had undergone a "very positive development," but there is speculation that Munich may look for another keeper.

Espanyol's Cameroon international Carlos Kameni has been mentioned along with Sebastien Frey (France, Fiorentina) and Artur Boruc (Poland, Glasgow Celtic).

Other Munich transfer speculation, for a post-season move, includes midfield talent Alexander Baumjohann from Borussia Moenchengladbach and SV Hamburg's Croatia striker Ivica Olic. (dpa)
