Frankfurt - The European Central Bank (ECB) cut its key interest rate by 50 basis points Thursday as part of a global effort by central banks to ward off the threat of recession.

The decision by the ECB's 21-member governing council to reduce its benchmark refinancing rate to 3.25 per cent was in line in with analysts' forecasts. (dpa)
