NTPC to form JV with NPCIL for nuke projects

The NTPC would form a joint venture with Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) for diversifying its efforts to generate nuclear energy. NTPC is the largest power generator of India and its board has approved the JV proposal with India’s only nuclear power producer. The joint venture is expected to come

Initially, the JV would set up a 2,000-MW nuclear power plant. The JV would boost the nuclear power generation capacity of India following the Nuclear Suppliers' Group waiver and Indo-US nuclear deal. India has set a target to produce about 20,000 MWe of nuclear power by 2020 and 36,000 MW by 2030.

According to the proposal of JV, NPCIL would hold 51 per cent stakes in the JV while remaining stakes would remain with NTPC. NTPC Chairman and Managing Director, R S Sharma said that two reactors would be installed under JV. Meanwhile, NTPC had already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian government for getting gas supply of 3 million tonnes per year for its projects in India

It is to be noted that only state-owned NPCIL produces nuclear power in India at present. It produced 16,930 million units of electricity in 2007-2008 with its installed capacity of 4,020 MWe. The proposed joint would help to increase nuclear power generation capacity of India and fulfill its energy demands in future.
