Warsaw  - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet with his Polish counterpart in September despite recent tensions and threats from Moscow over a proposed US anti-missile shield to be hosted in Poland, it was reported Thursday.

Citing anonymous sources Wyborcza, Poland's largest daily, said that Lavrov is to discuss the Russian-controlled Strait of Baltiysk with Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski.

The waterway is the Vistula Bay's only connection with the Baltic Sea, and the only route from the sea to the Polish port of Elblag.

Russia has on several occasions blocked access for Polish vessels and closed access completely in 2006.

Poland and Russia are now closer to an agreement on the issue and Polish sources say the talks are proof of improving Warsaw-Moscow relations, according to Wyborcza.

Russian and Polish officials also spoke of a possible visit from Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, but have set no exact date, the newspaper claimed.

Tensions are high between the two nations over the proposed US anti-missile shield. Poland wants a military aid package in exchange for US rights to put 10 interceptor missiles on its soil.

Russia suspects the shield could be used against it, despite US claims the system is meant for protection against "rogue states" like Iran.

Russia has threatened military action if the proposed shield moves ahead. In recent weeks, Russian military officials have openly discussed various military scenarios to counter the perceived threat. (dpa)
