IDFC First Bank Share Price Target at Rs 95: ICICI Securities

ICICI Securities has maintained its BUY call on IDFC First Bank with a revised 12-month target price of Rs 95, down from Rs 100, implying about 32% upside from the current market price of Rs 72. The bank's July-September quarter profit of Rs 1,045 crore beat the brokerage's estimate by 5% as costs stayed contained and asset quality held steady. A large foreign currency deposit raise of about Rs 34,100 crore pushed loan growth to 30% but cut the net interest margin by 38 basis points to 5.58%. Management expects margins to recover to 5.8% by the March quarter. The target cut reflects a structurally lower bancassurance fee stream.

IDFC First Bank: A Foreign Deposit Flood Lowers the Margin, but the Reservoir Is Filling

ICICI Securities trims its target to Rs 95 from Rs 100 but keeps faith in the private lender, citing a third straight quarter of roughly 500 basis-point operating jaws and steady asset quality.

The Quarter at the Inflow Gauge

Net interest income and slippages landed exactly on ICICI Securities' forecasts. Profit of Rs 1,045 crore nearly tripled from a year earlier and beat the brokerage's estimate by 5% on disciplined spending. Operating expenses rose only about 4% sequentially, and the quarter's profit slipped just 2.8% from the June quarter despite the margin squeeze.

The Floodgate: Where the Foreign Deposits Flowed

The defining event was a raise of FCNR(B) deposits worth roughly Rs 34,100 crore, about 10% of the June-quarter deposit base. The money arrived in late August and was not fully deployed by the September close. Management said the landed cost of these deposits was 6.85%, against 7.80% for domestic term deposits after reserve requirements, a saving of nearly 100 basis points on funding cost.

Intake

~Rs 34,100 crore

FCNR(B) deposits, converted at the report's implied ~Rs 94.8 per dollar

Spillway channels

FCNR-backed loans: about 7.5% of the loan book, lifting total loan growth to 30% YoY; a Rs 100 crore standard-asset provision was set aside against them.

Bulk deposits retired: bulk term deposits were run down by Rs 5,000 crore, cutting their share to 13.9% from 17.1%.

Certificates of deposit not renewed: about Rs 5,300 crore, which management said improved the quality of the liability book.

Excluding FCNR loans, credit growth still ran at about 6% sequentially, which ICICI Securities attributes to wholesale and business banking. CASA deposits rose 20% YoY and 5% QoQ, though the CASA ratio dipped to 47.6% because the FCNR inflow swelled the denominator. Fee income tied to the FCNR raise was a modest Rs 30 crore, against roughly Rs 60 crore spent raising FCNR deposits and medium-term note borrowings.

Margin Sluice: How 38 Basis Points Drained and How 22 Return

Reported margin fell 38 basis points to 5.58%. Stripping out a 6 basis-point one-off income-tax refund in the June quarter, the underlying decline was 32 basis points. Management sees margins range-bound in the near term before a quick climb to 5.80% by the March 2027 quarter, a plan that assumes one more 25 basis-point repo rate hike in FY27. Its loan book is 62% fixed-rate, 32% repo-linked and 6% MCLR-linked.

Drain gates: Q2 margin drag (bps)

Total: 38 bps, to 5.58%

Refill gates: guided recovery by Q4FY27 (bps)

Positive day count 8
Liquidity deployed 7
Repo rate hike benefit 7

Total: 22 bps, back to 5.80%

The return-on-assets damage is slight: management puts the FCNR hit at about 2 basis points, as a larger balance sheet also dilutes cost ratios. Quarterly RoA eased to 0.9% from 1.0%, with RoE at 8.5%. Average liquidity coverage was 125%, rising to 139% in September.

Operating Jaws Stay Open for a Third Quarter

Total net income growth, YoY: 21.1%

Operating expense growth, YoY: 16.0%

Gap of about 510 basis points. Core cost-to-income held near 70%, while the incremental ratio is about 55%.

ICICI Securities reads the gap as evidence of improving unit economics, and fee income grew 24% YoY. The cloud is bancassurance: new rules should erode commissions sharply, so the brokerage left FY28 profit broadly unchanged despite higher growth and margin assumptions. Management expects the banca hit to be offset by FCNR benefits, the repo hike and product changes.

Overall SMA 1+2 in the retail, rural and MSME book improved 5 basis points to 72 basis points, though the bank remains watchful of El Nino. Its wholesale book is 76% rated A+ and management reports no corporate delinquency in seven years apart from one ATM company. The bank guides that the expected-credit-loss transition hit to CET1 will be offset by credit-risk guidelines.

ICICI Securities raised FY27 EPS by 8% and FY28 by 2%. It cut its multiple to about 1.4 times FY28 adjusted book value from about 1.5 times to reflect a permanently smaller banca fee pool, arriving at Rs 95.

Flood-Warning Levels: Risks to Watch

Danger mark | ICICI Securities

Rural and retail stress. The brokerage's stated key risk; El Nino could test rural borrowers.

Warning mark | TopNews

Margin recovery hinges on a rate hike. Seven of the 22 guided basis points assume another repo increase.

Watch mark | TopNews

Banca fee erosion. The reason for the target cut; offsets are guided, not yet proven.

Editor's Note

Funded-asset growth columns do not reconcile. Exhibit 4 prints total funded-asset growth of 30% YoY and 14% QoQ, and digital and gold loans at +312% YoY and +175% QoQ. The rupee amounts in the same table imply about 8.9% YoY and 3.9% QoQ for the total, and about 33% and 18% for digital and gold. The printed mix column (consumer finance at 61%) also differs from the amounts (about 59%). The brokerage's text cites wholesale at +9% QoQ and business banking at +11% QoQ, while the amounts imply about 3% and 8%. TopNews has shown the amounts and left out the growth columns.

Margin decline is stated three ways. The summary says about 35 basis points, the body says 38 and the call notes say 32. The components add to 38 reported; 32 excludes the 6 basis-point one-off.

Target arithmetic. About 1.4 times the FY28 adjusted book value of Rs 65.3 gives about Rs 91; Rs 95 implies about 1.45 times. The report does not show the bridge.
