Amman - Jordan's opposition parties on Wednesday staged a sit-in before the UN bureau in Amman to mark the 60th anniversary of "Nakba" (Day of Tragedy), the Arab version for Israel's foundation in 1948 in historical Palestine.

The protesters deposited a message addressed to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon reasserting the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and be compensated for their properties under the UN General Assembly resolution 194 of 1948.

Jordan is home to 1.8 million Palestinian refugees who enjoy full citizenship - but it has repeatedly stated that the Palestinian refugees should be allowed the right to return to their homes they were forced to desert by Israeli troops.

The Islamic Action Front (IAF), Jordan's largest political party, has announced plans to stage a rally at his headquarters on Thursday after the Jordanian authorities refused to license a massive demonstration in Amman on Friday to mark the Nakba anniversary.

Jordan's opposition parties and affiliated 14 trade unions have so far rejected the peace treaty the Hashemite Kingdom concluded with Israel in 1994 and any other normalization steps with the Jewish state. (dpa)
