Study finds Reason as to why Women often Report of Being Cold at Work
Are you among those women who in their office feel cold in office air conditioners? Researchers have find out the reason in their new study and it is also due to the thermostat settings in the office.
The research published in the journal Nature Climate Change has stated keeping metabolic rate of women in mind, office thermostat settings should be determined. There is a need to have energy efficient buildings that are sensitive to the metabolic rates and body types of women.
In comparison to men, women have lower metabolic rate by 20 to 35%. This vital was not considered while determining thermostat settings. Study researchers were of the view that most building thermostats use a method of calculating optimal comfort level settings from 1960s.
This old method considers features including air temperature, air speed, and vapor pressure and clothing insulation. The calculation is based on a 40 year old man who weighs around 154 pounds.
Though this calculation has worked well in office settings back in 1960, no longer in 2015 where women now represent 50% of the workforce and have lower metabolic rates. Building physicist Joost van Hoof was of the view that if this factor is considered then a lot of energy can be saved as currently, they have been cooling for the male population at the moment.
There is a need for new building thermostat calculation and the need has been heard loud and clear.
