Although Florida is known as the Sunshine State, when it comes to harnessing solar power, lots of customers find it less profitable, as electricity in Florida is already cheap and there are very less incentives made available to shift from fossil fuels.

Now, anger over the issue has led to the coalition of hardline conservatives, evangelical Christians and liberal environmentalists. They all want to break down the monopoly of the big power companies.

Some others who are involved in the union include the Sierra Club, the Christian Coalition, the Libertarian Party, the Evangelical Environment Network, Greenpeace USA and Physicians for Social Responsibility.

The problem they kept forward is that Florida is one of only five states that openly prohibit anyone other than the big utilities from selling power.

Individuals with solar panels cannot sell the extra power they produce and solar companies are banned from selling any power they generate unless they sell it back to any of the utility companies.

Tory Perfetti, chairman of Floridians for Solar Choice, during a recent drive to collect petition signatures in St. Petersburg, said, "We are basically outlawing commerce when it involves solar. That's what this is ballot initiative is for, it is to open up Florida's energy market, to give people a choice".

The movement in total requires 700,000 signatures. Organizers of the drive said that they were successful in collecting nearly 100,000 signatures in the first month itself. The drive aims to allow the voters to decide in 2016 whether or not to allow solar providers to sell power directly to consumers.

Environmentalist David Cullen of the Sierra Club Florida said that global warming is the key reason to shift from use of fossil fuels, which release bulks of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
