TGB to focus on tea, coffee & water segments

TGB to focus on tea, coffee & water segmentsTata Global Beverages (TGB), the Rs 6,631-crore beverages division of Tata Group, has said that it would focus on the tea, coffee & water segments, rather than making a foray into the food space.

Around two years back, Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata had said that the company might enter the food segment. Later, the company announced that it would make acquisitions to foray into the food space.

But, TGB Managing Director Harish Bhat recently said in an interview, "We are a natural beverages company and our focus will be on tea, coffee and water."

Of the tea, coffee and water segments, the company aims to put more focus on coffee and water as it foresees greater revenues from these segments.

At present, TGB generates 70 per cent of its total turnover from tea; while coffee and water account for just 25 per cent and 2 per cent of the company's total turnover. The company foresees a volume growth of 4-5 per cent in its tea business in the current fiscal year.

TGB reported a strong year-on-year 54 per cent increase in consolidated net profit at Rs 119 crore for the three months ended September 30, thanks to a combination of strong operating performance in branded as well as non-branded business and lower finance costs.

Net sales jumped from Rs 1,612.03 crore in the second quarter of 2011-12 to Rs 1,842.57 crore in the same period of this year.
