BMW working on advanced technologies to provide better connectivityPremium German auto maker, BMW has laid out its plans to created well connected vehicles and offered a glimpse into some of the initiatives it is focusing on for research and development.

The company is revealing new features for its ConnectedDrive system, which will set new standards for integration of technologies in vehicles and driver comfort. The company sees a future where the vehicles will be designed in a such as way that they will be able to cater to every need of the user.

"The focus of all development work is the human being, which makes information about and insights into our customers around the world a key element of market research and development, now and in the future," BMW says in a media release.

One of the latest additions to the ConnectedDrive system is the integration of the iPhone calendar app allowing users to access it on their BMW's center screen. The app will show upcoming appointments and other details for the driver.

The company also said that it is planning to allow third party app developers to create apps to be used in its vehicles. The company will ultimately device which app is integrated in the vehicle but is betting big on app integration. It showcased integration of Qype, Wiki Local and other apps in its vehicles.

BMW currently focuses only on Apple iPhone but it has said that it is expanding to Android apps too. The apps need an open data connection currently provided by smartphone and this the company is also looking for 4G (LTE) data connections.
