Sensex Declines 52.74 Pts In The Week
Indian bourses closed the week marginally lower as against its earlier weekly closure amid prevailing uncertainty in worldwide markets, though traders cheered the country's better-than-expected IIP figures.
The Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) declined 0.31% or 52.74 points to close at 17,064.95 on Friday. The 30-share index had closed at 17,117.69 during the last week.
The Nifty also closed the week on a low at 5,119.35, down 16.15 points or 0.31%, from its last weekly closure at 5,135.5.
Broader indices closed almost unchanged as markets saw buy-ins due to short-covering and renewed interest. The BSE midcap index shed 0.08 percent and the BSE smallcap index went down 0.03 percent.
During the week, the top gainers on the Sensex included Cipla, M&M, HDFC Bank, RCom and BHEL.
Top losers were DLF, Hindalco Ind, Infosys, ITC and Tata Steel.
The sectors that gained the most in the week comprised auto, healthcare, capital goods, oil & gas and power.
The sectors that saw huge selling pressure were realty, IT, metals, telecom and consumer durables.
According to data with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), foreign institutional investors bought scrips worth $188.6 million.
In the Asian market, investors continued to trade uneasy after last week's hopeless US job data and on worry about the magnitude of the Euro zone debt crisis.
The Japanese Nikkei closed the week after losing 1.98% at 9,705.25.
The Hang Seng of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange ended at 19,872.38, up 0.47%.
Key European indices ended in the green after a successful bond sale by Spain helped reassure traders that the zone's economy was not in such a bad state after all.
London's FTSE shut shop 0.74% up at 5,163.68. Its French peer CAC ended 2.89% up at 3,555.52, while the German DAX closed 1.83% up at 6,047.83.
The benchmark indices such as the Nasdaq gained 1.1% to end the week at 2,243.6, and the S&P 500 soared 2.51% at 1,091.6.
The Dow Jones industrial average also closed 2.81% up at 10,211.07. (With Inputs from Agencies)
