Call of Duty racks up record salesLos Angeles  - The video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 racked up 310 million dollars in its first day of sales in the United States and Britain, game publisher Activision said Thursday.

Enthusiasts snapped up 4.7 million copies of the 60-dollar game, which can be played on PCs, the Sony Playstation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360.

The sales figure from those two countries alone matched the previous record holder, Grand Theft Auto IV, which brought in 310 million dollars worldwide on its first day of sales in April 2008.

Activision did not release worldwide sales figures for Call of Duty but claimed that the sales marked the most successful launch ever in the entertainment industry, easily beating the record 155- million-dollar record cinema box-office revenue of the Batman sequel The Dark Knight. (dpa)
