Two-goal Schalke down Frankfurt to move third

Gerald AsamoahGelsenkirchen, Germany  - Gerald Asamoah came off the bench to score and Jefferson Farfan converted a stoppage-time penalty as Schalke defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 Friday to move to third in the German Bundesliga.

Asamoah dived to head home from a Lukas Schmitz free-kick in the 66th minute, eight minutes after coming on as a substitute.

Farfan put away the spot kick in the second minute of stoppage time to make it 2-0 after he was himself brought down by keeper Jan Zimmermann.

It was a second successive defeat for mid-table Frankfurt who ended the game with 10 men after Pirmin Schwegler was dismissed with five minutes remaining following a second booking.

The win gives Schalke 16 points, one adrift of leaders SV Hamburg and second-placed Bayer Leverkusen.

Hamburg are Sunday at bottom side Hertha Berlin, who are reportedly about to appoint Friedhelm Funkel as coach to replace the dismissed Lucien Favre.

Leverkusen could go top for a day at least with a win or draw at home to Nuremberg on Saturday.

Hoffenheim, three points behind in fourth place, meanwhile visit promoted Mainz.

Among other games Saturday, Bayern Munich, lying seventh, entertain second-last Cologne, champions Wolfsburg are at lowly Bochum, Borussia Dortmund visit Borussia Moenchengladbach, while on Sunday fifth-placed Werder Bremen are at mid-table Stuttgart. dpa
