Accused Mumbai attacker requests newspaper, toothpaste, perfume
New Delhi - The lone suspect captured during the November terrorist attacks on Mumbai has requested newspapers, toothpaste, perfume and permission to walk in the verandah outside his prison cell, news reports said Thursday. Ajmal Amir Kasab's request addressed to his jailor was read out by his attorney, SG Abbas Kazmi, in the special court in Mumbai hearing the Mumbai terrorist attack trial, the NDTV news channel reported.
Kasab is the main accused in the November 26-29 attacks, in which more than 170 people were killed.
The trial by a special court began April 15 in the heavily guarded Arthur Road jail premises, where Kasab was being kept in solitary confinement.
"Kasab has written that solitary confinement is affecting his mental health, and he has requested permission to take walks in an enclosed verandah outside his barrack," Kazmi told reporters after the day's proceedings.
According to the lawyer, special Judge ML Tahilyani said the court would check with the jailor and provide what was allowed according to the prison manual.
Kazmi also said that Kasab had asked that the money recovered from him when he was arrested should be kept in a jail account and the items he needed could be bought with these funds.
The defence lawyer said 7,000 to 8,000 rupees (139 to 159 dollars) had been found on Kasab when he was captured.(dpa)
