US loses 663,000 jobs in March, unemployment at 8.5 per cent Washington  - The United States shed 663,000 jobs in March and the country's unemployment rate jumped to 8.5 per cent from 8.1 per cent the month before, the US Labour Department said Friday.

More than 5 million jobs have now been cut since a recession began in the United States in December 2007. The losses have been "large and widespread" across all industries, the department said. dpa
