No 'visa power' for Gulzar, Sukhwinder
Lyricist, singer had to call off plans to attend ceremony
Oscar winner Gulzar and Jai Ho… singer Sukhwinder Singh were conspicuous by their absence at the award presentation ceremony. They had to cancel their plans at the last moment since they didn't get their visas in time, confirmed sources.
Gulzar was supposed to get the award along with Rahman in the 'best song' category while Sukhwinder was to perform the song along with music director on stage. Sources said that Sukhwinder had to wait till the last minute before being informed that he won't be on the flight to Hollywood.
Rahman took up the mike to sing Jai Ho… in the absence of Sukhwinder during the performance at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.
Though Gulzar chose to avoid stating the reason why he couldn't make it to the ceremony, Sukhwinder Singh admitted that he didn't get his visa even though he had submitted the relevant documents well in time.
Gulzar said he too was supposed to attend the ceremony, but decided not to go ahead with it. "It was because I didn't have a proper suit," he retorted.
According to sources, the person in-charge of the music troupe of the film didn't submit the papers to the embassy on time which resulted in the delay.
"I would have been happier had I been there. Though I didn't watch Rahman's performance but I am sure he has done a wonderful job of it as usual," added Sukhwinder.
Gulzar says that there is nothing to term the film's Oscar sweep as "revolutionary."
"I would say that this film is a milestone in the history of Indian cinema, but I would not use the term 'cult' film," said Gulzar.
Gulzar credits Rahman for Jai Ho… and says that it is the musician who deserves the entire credit for it winning an Oscar.
