NASA robot to make largest rocket parts for Mars mission
According to reports, a huge robot is assisting NASA engineers to construct the biggest, lightweight complex rocket parts ever created for space vehicles to deeper crewed missions together with Mars exploration.
It is a robot established at Marshall Space Flight Centre of NASA in Alabama. According to the US space agency, it is among the largest composites manufacturing robots made in the US.
According to Preston Jones, deputy director of Marshall’s Engineering Directorate, “This addition to Marshall’s Composites Technology Centre provides modern technology to develop low-cost and high-speed manufacturing processes for making large composite rocket structures. We will build and test these structures to determine if they are a good fit for space vehicles”.
Jones said these spacecraft will be the ones that will carry humans on exploration missions to the red planet and other places. As per reports, many different materials are required to construct a space vehicle such as NASA’s new Space Launch System, which is a heavy-lift rocket created to carry explorers on deep space missions.
According to NASA, with the lighter the rocket, it will be possible to carry more payload, including crew, food, science instruments, equipment, and habitats.
According to Justin Jackson, Marshall materials engineer who has installed and examined the robot, the robot will create structures bigger than 8 meters, in diameter, which will be some of the biggest composite structures ever made for space vehicles. He also assisted in building and testing one of the largest composite rocket fuel tanks ever constructed.
