Mumbai, Delhi half-way to prosperity: says UN report

Mumbai, Delhi half-way to prosperity: says UN reportIndia's financial capital Mumbai and political capital New Delhi have been ranked at 52nd and 58th spots in the list of 95 world cities identified by the United States as those moving towards prosperity.

Released by UN Habitat, the State of World's Cities report cited poor infrastructure and environment conditions among some other reasons for its decision of ranking the two Indian metropolitan cities so low in the list.

The UN ranked the cities on the basis of five parameters, viz. productivity, infrastructure, environmental sustainability, equity and quality of life.

Mumbai and New Delhi got ranked much below several Asian cities such as Beijing, Bangkok, Jakarta, Hanoi, and Manila in terms of prosperity.

Commenting on the ranking of the two cities in the report, Union housing & urban poverty alleviation secretary A K Mishra, said that there was a need to take a more holistic view of the issues in the cities.

Commenting on the report, he said, "Unless we integrate infrastructure development and prosperity with concepts like equality and quality of life, the city is not going to be livable."

The UN report praised Bangalore for achieving great success in IT revolution, and also described Hyderabad as the pharmaceutical capital of India.
