Mobile User Base Added 15 Million In Jan 09Here’s a good news for the Indians as the telecom market in the country added a record number of customers in a single month.

In India, more than 15 million telephone connections were added during the last month.

In its latest report, TRAI said that the country now has over 400 million telecom connections. With this, the total number of those people who are using mobiles in the country has gone to 362.30 million.

In January 2008, the number was 233.63 million. It simply means that the country has added around 10 to 15 million telephone connections every month. The mobile connections alone account for 91% of the country’s telephone base, due to which the telephone density in the country has now improved to almost 35%.

It can be recalled here that in December 2008, country’s largest telecom player, Bharti Airtel had nearly 10.81 million customers in the country.

During this period (Jan 09), country’s second largest mobile company, Reliance Communications has added 4.95 million users. With this, its subscriber base had reached to 66.29 million.

Another important player in the market, Vodafone Essar which is controlled by Britain's Vodafone also registered a growth rate of 3-4 per cent in January.

Apart from this, the country has also now has around 5.65 million subscribers to high speed internet connectivity.

However, experts do believe that India still has a big untapped market for telephone connections that needs to be explored.
